Roxy | Lounge Bar

Roxy Lounge Bar | Interiors
Size : 2500sft
The Park is an old and one of the most well known hotels in Kolkata. The site we got, though a part of the original hotel, had been lying disused for the past 30yrs and was in a derelict state. The brief was to create a lounge bar for the older crowd who did not want to go to the popular but noisy discotheque next door, yet have a good time in a quieter place. The basic concept was to clean up and retain the original shell as it was and add elements that were in contrast to it. The floating mezzanine was the most important element we added and constructed it in materials like steel and polymer resin with concealed aqua coloured lighting. This gave it a highly finished and cold look which was the other extreme of the warm earthy distressed finish of the shell. The installation of hundreds of concave polished aluminium plates on one of the walls emphasized this contrast while reiterating the linearity of the space. At the street end of the lounge bar, shadowy abstract images are projected on a frosted glass wall bathed in an aqua LED light. These prerecorded moving images of people interacting within the lounge bar at different times, creates a sense of mystery from the street, and the entrance of the hotel. From inside the lounge, the projections create an interesting interaction between real and virtual worlds. A fairly vast palette of materials comes together in the space. Brushed brass, zebrano veneer, polished aluminum, sandblasted resin, rust chenille, metallic leathers and faux furs all coexist within a shell of steel, brick, sandstone, concrete and wood.
